Intentionally Working Your Craft

Yesterday was June 19, 2019. At about 10 PM, I officially launched the Kuumba Collections website. It was a journey to get it done. I had to keep saying one of my favorite mantras… “Start small. Work often.” It’s not “perfect” but it’s up.   June 19, 2019; it was Juneteenth. This date is part of our collective story; our collective history. This date is a reminder of why Kuumba Collections exist.

Kuumba Collections is a group of friends and family who love to create.  We use different media; we have different muses; we are at different phases of our creative journey. Yet, the common strings of intentionality, authenticity, and courage keep us bound together in community.

I often work on pieces that have been on my mind for quite a while. I take time to imagine and manipulate the many possibilities: what material? What tools? How am I going to stretch myself? And then I wait….I wait until it “feels” right to start the work. There are many quotes that have of message of “not to rush the artist”.  Once you start to create, you have a greater appreciation for those types of quotes.

The intentionality of the work is in the process not the outcome. The authenticity of the work is in the telling of our stories. The courage is being vulnerable enough to the share those stories and our gifts. Don’t rush the creative! It ain’t easy and it all takes time. …And our community, our village is keeping us honest! #thevillageisourstrength The village encourages, challenges, cooperates, shares, envisions, reminds, and sustains us.

So, it is our intent to use this website as the platform for our village, Kuumba Collections, to document and share our processes, creative stories, and gifts with you.

Welcome!
